Back-to-school season is in full swing, so it’s the perfect time to plan streamlined routines for the upcoming year. Whether it’s you or your child heading back to class, all the school paraphernalia can easily feel like it’s taking over your space.
Even if no one in your family is going back to school, the end of summer is the perfect time to arrange your space for a fresh start. Organizing your apartment can make your daily routine a lot more functional. Here are four ideas for back-to-school prep in an apartment:
To reign in any end-of-summer mayhem, get everything down on paper. Include ongoing commitments and extracurricular activities, as well as upcoming events and tasks that need to be accomplished. Once you have all the information swirling around your brain written down, you can sort and prioritize your to-do list.
Make sure you have an updated personal and family calendar. For a family calendar, sync with all family members’ devices, or post an analog calendar where everyone will be able to check it.
Closet space is at a premium at times in apartment living, so now is a good time to rotate in some fall clothes. In the South, hot days are still ahead throughout September, so mix and match your wardrobe to make layers available for cool mornings and warm middays. Keep more fall clothes stored in an accessible place for later in the season.
Create a place for everything that’s needed to get out the door. Put hooks near the entry for backpacks, jackets, and bags. A basket or shelf for shoes can go underneath. Have an ingoing and outgoing space for papers nearby.
How much space do you have for homework? If you have desks available, clear them off and set them up with supplies and utensils. If the kitchen table is going to be the default homework spot, you can make space in a cupboard or put everything you’ll need together in a basket, so supplies can be cleaned up and stowed away when homework is done.
